I’ve never been this close to nature—and I can honestly say I’m lucky to have experienced it. In celebration of #EarthDay, I had the chance to complete the full trail of Masungi’s Discovery Trail, and it was nothing short of unforgettable.
My First Trail Hike:
It was my first time hiking through limestone trails, and the experience was both eye-opening and inspiring. Our guide shared so much valuable knowledge, especially about endemic plants like the *Tayabak*—a rare vine that can be found in Masungi Georeserve.
I also learned about the different species of bamboo and microsnails, and how this area—once echoing with the sounds of chainsaws in 1996—has transformed into a powerful symbol of reforestation. One powerful moment for me was seeing the remaining stump of a giant *DUNGUN* tree that had been cut down before the reforestation began.
A Sanctuary Under Threat
Today, Masungi Georeserve is a thriving conservation site, home to over 400 species of flora and fauna. But this sanctuary is under threat. The people who have devoted their lives to protecting these forests—the guardians of Masungi—are now facing an eviction order.
Conservationists warn that if they are removed, it could lead to quarrying and illegal land grabs that would undo decades of progress and endanger countless species.
Why We Need to Protect Masungi?
1. It’s a haven for ultra-rare species.
If Masungi’s ecosystem is destroyed, rare species like the *Tayabak* may disappear forever.
2. It’s a learning ground.
Masungi serves as a living classroom where students and researchers can study nature up close.
3. It’s a natural defense.
The karst forest in Masungi helps safeguard the watershed that supplies Metro Manila—a vital environmental function we cannot afford to lose.
What We Can Do?
Protecting Masungi isn’t just the job of its guardians—it’s a collective effort. Here’s how we can help:
Sign and share the #SaveMasungi petition (link in @masungigeoreserve’s bio).
Visit responsibly and spread awareness.
Every share, comment, and signature adds pressure to preserve this important site. Let’s make sure the next generations can also witness the magic of Masungi and the wonders of nature on Earth Days to come.
A Message to Our Leaders
Hopefully, @denrphilippines will act in favor of protecting our natural heritage—so that the youth of tomorrow can enjoy the richness and beauty of the wild places we are lucky to still have today.
